How to Deal with Plumbing Emergencies Until the Pros Arrive
Water is essential to life, but if it gets out of control, it can do a lot of damage. When plumbing emergencies happen, you know you should call a plumber, but do you know what to do while you wait for the professionals to arrive? Here are some tips.
- Shut Off the Water. The first thing you need to do in any plumbing emergency is shut off the water, so that no more flows into places it should not be. You should know the location of the water shut-off valve for all taps and appliances, and you should know the location of the main water shut-off for your home. If the leak is coming from a specific appliance or tap, shut the water off there. If there is a large quantity of water, or if you don’t know where it’s coming from, shut the water off at the main. Finally, if the problem is with a water heater, turn off the fuel source. For gas heaters, turn the switch to the “pilot” position. Unplug or switch off an electric heater.
- Keep Yourself Safe. Plumbing emergencies are never worth risking your safety. Never enter any standing water you can’t see through. It may be hiding sharp objects or electrical hazards. Unplug any appliances that have fallen into the water. If outlets, plugs or any other part of your home’s wiring has gotten wet, shut off your home’s power at the main. Exit the home immediately if water has caused any structure damage.
- Clean Up. Sometimes, you can clean up while waiting for a plumber to arrive. Attempt this only if it is safe to do so. Use old towels to soak up water. If you have a wet-dry shop vacuum, you can also use it. Do not use a standard vacuum, only one specially designed to handle moisture, and plug it in well away from any water.

My technician, Richard serviced my furnaces today. He contacted me by phone first and was on time. Richard was both friendly and efficient. Your techs are your best advertisements.Eloise B.

Saturday Night repair on the furnace (very cold outside). Great, service person was over within an hour, work was done quickly and I was all warm and cozy again!

I have used Meyer's several times for both plumbing and electrical work. The technicians are skilled, professional and friendly. It's a comfort to know that any issue I have will be handled correctly. They are also very responsive in terms of a quick turnaround time which is great! All the employees deserve a big hand. Very well my latest issue was a root problem that went all the way out to the alley. Water was backing up in the basement. The plumber handled it quickly and without issue.

Got a new water heater, was installed in about 2 hours and they did great work. Pricing was good too. I would definitely be calling them for any other work.

Great Prices, Great Work! They have installed a new central air unit and a now a new furnace along with new ductwork. Very happy with their work and especially with the prices. We got many quotes and they beat everyone by quite a bit. We'll be using them in the future as well!!

Heating and A/C. I really don’t know about the price, I guess compared with what I’ve seen on television, advertised prices. This is the first time we’ve had central air. They have good quality service.

I've used them a couple of times now for heating, air-conditioning and plumbing. Prompt service with call-ins before they arrive. Replaced my entire HVAC system and they did a professional job. Had an issue with the A/C unit where it turned on anytime the furnace turned on, but they came back the next day and fixed it. Would definitely recommend them for any work they do.
