How Do I Know If My Home AC Motor Is Bad?

Even though fall is upon us, our weather doesn’t always understand that and continues to mix in hot days more often than many of us would like. That means many of us are still relying on our air conditioning systems to keep our homes and businesses cool despite cold weather appearing to be on the horizon.

Unfortunately, since we’ve been dealing with hot weather since spring, and this summer has been one of the hottest on record, our AC systems may be running out of steam. One sign that summer has taken its toll on our air conditioners is when our AC motors go bad.

Signs Your Home AC Motor Is Bad

If your air conditioner’s fan motor goes bad, fixing it will quickly become your top priority because more than likely your AC won’t be able to keep your home cool until it’s repaired. Fortunately, there are signs you can look for that will let you know early on that your AC motor is going bad so that you can get it fixed before your AC stops working:

  • AC fan has problems starting or stopping – If your AC fan keeps going even after you turn off the AC, you may have a bad AC motor. If your AC fan doesn’t start when you turn on your air conditioner, you may need to have your AC motor repaired or replaced.
  • No cold airflow – Lack of cold air coming from your AC can be a sign that your air conditioner’s blower motor isn’t working.
  • AC motor is noisy – In some cases, it will be a rattling noise coming from your outdoor condenser unit. In other instances, it will be a humming or buzzing sound. Sometimes it will be all three. Whatever form your AC motor noise comes in, it will be loud, and it will be a signal that your AC motor’s best days are behind it. Often a noisy AC motor is the result of bad motor blades.
  • Fan blades are slow or still – If you hear your AC’s compressor turn on but you notice that the fan blades are moving very slowly or not moving at all, your AC fan motor has probably gone bad.
