|

When you have a faulty furnace ignition, there are many reasons that could explain the issue. However, many of the solutions to your problem are at your fingertips. Here are some possible causes to your faulty ignition and their solutions.

Your Pilot Won’t Light

If your pilot light won’t light, your pilot opening might be clogged or it’s not getting gas. To remedy this issue, first clean the pilot opening. Then make sure you fully depress the pilot light button and ensure the gas valve to the furnace is fully open.

Your Pilot Light Won’t Stay Lit

If your pilot light keeps going out, you may have a loose or faulty thermocouple, a faulty electric pilot or your pilot flame is set too low.

  • If your furnace has a loose or faulty thermocouple, you’ll need to slightly tighten the thermocouple.  If that doesn’t work, contact an HVAC professional to replace the thermocouple.
  • If you set your pilot flame too low, adjust it so that the flame is about two inches long.
  • If your electric pilot isn’t working, call an HVAC professional. Also, a faulty electric pilot signals that it may be time for a furnace replacement.

Your pilot light is important element to your furnace’s operation. A furnace inspection can ensure your pilot light is operating properly before the cold weather hits.
